As many of you know, I belong to an online discussion group called "Parents of Little People." It has been a huge support system as well as an invaluable source of information. Lately online discussions have revolved around the word "midget" and it's use in the general population. I know that this word has been innocently used for decades but as a mother of an LP, a medical professional, and a friend of many LP's, I have an obligation to at the very least, let all of the readers of this blog know that this word is highly offensive and not under any circumstances appropriate. Please, please, please do not refer to my son, my friends, or anyone short of stature as a "midget". If you could also do me the favor and politely correct anyone you hear using this word. The correct words are "little person, short statured," and/or "person who has dwarfism."
In this day and age, as we continue to progress towards equality and acceptance of minority groups, it's high time to put an end to the "m-word."
Thank you!

I had a similar scolding from my friend Angela who works with Autistic children. Unfortunately the word "retarded" was in my vocabulary to emphasize situations that were ridiculous- never people. I still catch myself using the phrase but am much more sensitive after realizing how others may perceive it. Be patient with those around you- we don't often mean to hurt anyone. :)
Love you!
great post! I need to post about the M word on my blog one of these days...
I don't mean to come off as scolding, this is not a personal attack against any of my family, friends, etc. This is mainly in response to the most recent episode of Celebrity Apprentice where the word "midget" was thrown around like nobody's business. Beyond that, little people were objectified in this show and were the butt of the joke. It then becomes personal, to me and to other LP's and their loved ones. That's why I felt compelled to write this post. I am at the moment angry and frustrated that this could happen in 2009. I love you all and know that you would never intentionally hurt me or my family.
I didn't take it personally (and venture to guess that Mary didn't, either, knowing her) but I did take it to heart. I've been made extremely sensitive to certain cultural issues because of the work I do, and yet I catch myself every so often making a comment that could be offensive to someone listening.
Though I haven't liked the "m word" for some time, I didn't realize until Jakey was diagnosed what the appropriate term was. Thanks for using your situation to educate all of us who are ignorant. Great post, and well-written!
What a great post-very well written. To the point and educational. Jakey is so lucky to have you as his advocate!
